Well, I just eclipsed the 7 month mark. My regular updates have become more sporadic, not that I haven’t had anything to report, but life outside my knee has taken priority. In the past, everything was so knee-centric: activities, appointments, research, etc. and now that most of that is behind me, I’m free to roam about my normal life.
Let’s rewind back a couple months. I was struggling with the up’s and down’s of physical therapy coupled with a skewed focus on what I regarded was best for my knee. I ended that roller-coaster and got on the ferris wheel of recovery; slow and steady with no pain and plenty to gain. This has been working well for me so far. The up’s and downs are of less magnitude and it feels like things are slowly beginning to set into more of a predicative state. I contribute this to a steady regime of straight-leg lifts. Once I mastered freestyle, it was onto the ankle weights. I do about 100-200 daily with a 5lb ankle weight.
I still have a loosey-goosey feeling with the occasional snap, crackle, pop…but in the grand scheme of things, I’m slowly progressing back to normal. And by no means has this been speedy in any way; the ticking clock of time has paced my recovery to a turtle’s pace. The hare has long passed me by but fortunately the tortoise hasn’t slow or stopped, nor looked backwards.
There are big plans in store for my knee though. With summer right around the corner, it’s time to put all this hard work to the trails. We’ve got two backpacking trips planned in July, as well as a potential vacation in Switzerland. The future has been a great motivator indeed, and the thought of trekking through the mountains gets me in the gym everyday working on my strength and focusing on my rehabilitation.
