I had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. We went to Claire’s parents, enjoyed some relaxation and stuffed our faces on a warm 85 degree day in San Diego. Along with some appetizers and a side dish, we also packed my entourage of ice packs, since a celebration of this duration would require some knee attention.
I had a couple stiff drinks before dinner, which provided a valuable lesson; alcohol and prescription pain killers don’t mix well. I became lightheaded, dizzy and even a little nauseated. It was a similar to a hangover, but without the throbbing head. And like a true hangover, I swore never to drink again. Even now, the thought of a cold beer isn't very tempting. In the end, it was nothing a delicious slice of pecan pie couldn't cure.
Claire’s parents were impressed with how much I had improved from the last time they saw me. I’m now walking fairly normal, with a regular gait, and my knee isn't ballooned out like it was last week. Parts of my knee are still tender, and I still have a lot of improvement to gain in my range of motion and muscle tone. But overall, I never thought I’d be this far into my recovery at only 2 weeks.
So I guess I have a lot to be thankful for. I feel so lucky that things have gone so smoothly, without issue or adverse events. More importantly, I feel so much support, and that alone has been a cornerstone of my recovery.
